Business Librarians

Business Librarians in Universities, Colleges, and Businesses: We're Everywhere!

I am extremely new to the Business side of the Librarian profession. I would like to know if anyone has any recomendations or links to easy-to-understand tutorials that might help me get started understanding the resources.

Thanks!

Hi Emily,

You might take a look at the BRASS (Business Reference and Services Section) website. Here's a link to the professional tools page:"http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/rusa/sections/brass/brassprotools/professional.cfm"
Specifically, look at the "Core Competencies for Business Reference". This will help you get an idea of some common types of questions that people ask and some of the resources available to answer those questions.

Also, another really good resource is Strauss's Handbook of Business Information: A Guide for Librarians, Students, and Researchers Second Edition by Rita W. Moss.

Best of luck in your new position!

Amia,

Thank you so much! I'm sure all of this information will teach me a lot. If you think of anything else, I'll be in your debt!

Thanks!

Emily

Yes, Emily, BRASS is a great place to start, and if you can get involved it is a great group! Please feel free to post more questions here as well.

Welcome!!!

Hi Emily, if you will be at ALA this year I strongly suggest the pre-conference program BRASS is putting together. Should be excellent!

Hey Emily,

Not sure if you've already found them, but BRASS recently started putting together a list of business tutorials created by business librarians here: http://connect.ala.org/node/75664

The first section, "Comprehensive Business Research Tutorials" provides links to online tutorials - some video, some text heavy - and though they are aimed at students, and may cover some specific resources you may not have access to, I think they still offer a pretty good sense of what 'business research' encompasses.

Another section below that, "Individual Business Database Tutorials" provides an alphabetical list of tutorials on specific databases.

Best,

Here are a few more...
Library of Congress Business Reference Resource. BRS Assists -Business Reference Section. Science, Technology and Business Division. There is a forum there you can join as well but it is basically to help answer common business questions: Business Reference resources http://www.loc.gov/rr/business/

Or ask a Library of Congress librarian- Business & Economic Research Advisor (BERA): http://www.loc.gov/rr/business/assists/

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Technology administers the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program.
http://www.sbir.gov/links/index.htm

And I know BRASS was mentioned but they also have a link called Public Libraries Business Briefcase:
http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/rusa/sections/brass/brasspubs/pub...

Hope this helps!
