Hi Emily, if you will be at ALA this year I strongly suggest the pre-conference program BRASS is putting together. Should be excellent!

Are you suggesting the simple idea of coming up with a unique tag that we all use? For example if all the business librarians in the world who use delicious would simply use the tag buslib whenever they bookmark a site that would be of interest to o…

I did see that announcement. The Bruno Library is a beautiful facility. The only problem is that my wife wants to move out west if we need to move at all.

Thanks for the reply. Seven months into my post-graduation job search I've still not found a full-time position. Finding library work is orders of magnitude more difficult that I had been led to believe it was.

Hi, Laurie. I graduate with my MLIS on August 11. Librarianship is a major career change for me and I'd like to network as much as is humanly possible. Where are you a business librarian, if you don't mind my asking?
All the best,
Patrick Bryant

I think we don't use it as much as you were hoping because we (or I should say some of us) don't quite "get" it yet, but as librarians, are willing to try.
I know that we've talked about our library having a Facebook or MySpace page. We could, of course, but I'm not yet sure of its efficacy, whereas I do see the value of our blog.
I use the BUSLIB list and add and ask and I understand the parameters. You suggested people provide a list of good websites; when I find a good website, I usually just throw it up on the blog.

Thanks Laurie. I think this is a good platform and very useful, especially for those like me who work in solo positions.

So, I guess it looks like the members section does not have full searching functions yet, and ning plans on releasing it in the future. I hope soon.

A clunky way to search member profiles is to go to google advanced search and search the domain name
http://businesslibrarians.ning.com/
and whatever keyword you are looking for in a profile.

Interesting, it won't let me edit my chatter! I used their instead of they're. How annoying.

Broadus, No problem. :)

Stacey, That's a good idea. When I open the search engine on the members page, for some reason it doesn't seem to be searching all the fields. I typed in both university and academics and nothing came up. I'll take the question to the creators forum and see if they have a solution.

Beth, as the creator of the ning I can customize and add questions to the profiles page. One issue, it seems most people do not answer a majority of the questions. But, I'd be happy to add questions, just let me know specific questions you'd like to see. (although at this point, it doesn't seem their searchable, as I stated above).

Laurie: Thanks for starting this. Do you know if you can customize the fields of info that the system elicits from members? And, then if those are searchable? For example, there's a generic "about me" field...but could you create new fields and ask users about what companies they've worked for, what industries, what systems they have expertise in, etc...I'm asking not only for this context...but also just to better understand Ning's capabilities in general...
